Lemon Throwing Team Builder

by Gary Webb
(Southampton, UK)

This team building exercise was used during a training day at a restaurant where I worked. With the entire team gathered in a circle, we started throwing a lemon from one side of the circle to the other. The number of lemons in play was gradually increased, until there were so many lemons flying you could hardly keep track of them.

This was in part a trust exercise, as you had to trust the other people in the circle not to throw so hard that there was risk of injury (at the time, there were a lot of young, impetuous lads at the restaurant). Overall, the lemon throwing game showed how quickly a situation can get out of control, as well as being a way to learn how to predict what will happen and see order in the chaos.
