I used to, but now I.... icebreaker exercise

(Tyler, Texas)

Group Size - Large (20+)

Group Abilities - All Abilities
Icebreaker Purpose - Opening Up
Preparation - none
Materials - 1 pen and 1 piece of paper or card per participant.
Time - 5 to 10 minutes

Give each participant a piece of paper and a pen. Ask them to write on one side , "I used to ..." and on the other side write "but now I..." Have each person fill out both sides of their card.

Next line everyone up in a circle. The first person reads the side that says, "I used to ....,(and whatever they wrote)" and the person next to him reads his card that says, "but now I...(whatever they wrote)"

In other words the person next to you completes your card by saying what is on their card.

The play continues until every one in the circle has completed their cards. Some of the sayings are very funny and others may be more serious, but it's a great icebreaker exercise to get people to open up about themselves.
